Is It a Good Investment For 2018: iPhone X vs. Entry Level DSLR Camera

The iPhone X, the top thing trending in technology items for 2017. No doubt everyone has seen the iPhone's commercials and have been amazed at the demonstrations of its technology and more importantly its photographic capabilities. The featured portrait mode and slight camera upgrades have raised the question, is the iPhone entering the realm of entry level DSLR cameras?

Here is my unbiased review after testing the iPhone X's photographic capabilities.

iPhone X camera: A new beast or refined monster?

The camera on the iPhone X is typically a refined version of the dual camera found on the iPhone 7 +. The primary upgrades for the X is stability control featured on both cameras instead of one, an aperture of 2.2 over 2.4 and new software upgrades. In non-technical language this equates to greater capture of motion photography, higher resolution pictures in low light conditions with built-in applications(modes) that take time and guess work out of basic photo-editing. The main advantage of the iPhone X is the software that allows anyone to take high quality photos in various styles with a touch to the screen. (By various styles i'm talking about the different modes featured in the camera application.)

Photographers Pet: Iphone X or DSLR (entry level) Camera?

In my opinion, if your an aspiring photographer go with the DSLR option.

If one of your main attractions to the iPhone X is the camera , I would consider a few factors such as cost and versatility. The cost of a entry level DSLR camera costs significantly less than an iPhone X (400 vs. 1000). Now you might be saying to yourself that the iPhone is so much more than just a camera as it comparable to a good lens and editing software with options of add-on software. This is true but lets not forget about the initial price of that entry DSLR with a few minor upgrades, for example: lets take a Canon T5 +Canon 50mm lens +Effects by Onone ($350+$130+$100=$580 vs. $1000). I guarantee that the DSLR setup will give you higher quality photos and by far greater creative versatility with what I consider the best image editing software for ease of use. The main difference between the two options other than price is the variation of skill. The iPhone X requires no skills or learning curve and produces good photographs while the DSLR option requires a little skill and wider learning curve to find your niche in creating great photographs.

Bottom Line:

If your a creative individual who wants to take the best photography I would highly recommend going for the entry level DSLR route as the iPhone is gaining momentum in the field, it still isn't quite on the same playing field where photography is concerned.

If your a individual that just wants to up your photography game without having to learn or invest much time/effort in the process then the iPhone X is a good choice.

If you are strapped for cash and are in between the two then i'd stick to your current camera phone and invest some money and time in learning some software such as Adobe photoshop or Raw by Onone.
