My Form Of Drawing (Ink Only)

Dec 5, 2016

Sketching with a .5mm ink pen and an imagination.

This image started with sketching a few lines and evolved into this. In the process I thought it kind of resembled a flower head, so I went with it ( think of it as my spin on the rose from beauty and the beast cartoon).

My style of drawing has been referred to as, "butterfly" and "tattoo art", because I only use ink pen(s) while putting emphasis on small details and shadowing by smearing ink.

Why draw with ink only?

I was never good at traditional drawing (pencil) or drawing in general. One day I was doodling with a ink pen and accidentally smeared some ink which I thought made nice shadowing. I soon began experimenting with this new found technique and found it worked for me to add depth and generate more ideas with ease. One day while in the process of experimenting I had someone walk by and say , " hey, you working on that tattoo art.". I of course asked what was meant by tattoo art? I was told it was because when drawing I looked as if I was giving the paper a tattoo ( face set close to the paper, intricately drawing and smearing away ink). On other instances some of my work has been called butterfly art due to intricate small lines or patterns being molded into the picture.

Thus my style was given a name.
